Last chance to claim misplaced items at Olympic lost and found

Lost a pair of those iconic red mittens during the Olympics? There's still time to reclaim them -- up until 4 p.m. today. More than 4,300 items ended up at the Olympic lost and found during the Games, including more than 500 umbrellas, dozens of cameras, sunglasses and yes, half a dozen bags of red mittens.

To reclaim an item from the lost and found at 450 West Broadway before its doors close this afternoon, you'll need to provide accurate details about precisely where it was lost and when, as well as details about what the item looks like.

On Thursday, remnants of the Olympic party -- noisemakers, funny hats, costume bits, flags and a lot of red and white clothing -- sat stuffed in boxes. "I think the most interesting to me is the pile of books we have. It's funny how so many people brought a book to a sporting event," said Ellen Babers, Vanoc's senior project manager with event services. "Other than that there is a walker that came with a sippy cup attached to it."

Several beer-soaked T-shirts were also turned in, but tossed when they started to go mouldy and stink.

After the lost and found closes, the Network of Intercity Community Services, the organization contracted by the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee to run it, will begin giving the items to charity or selling them.

"We'll probably just have a couple of garage sales," said Hendrik Hoekema, manager of the network. "Some of the more expensive things and things like the red mittens we may sell on eBay."

He said any money raised will go to starting an early childhood education program to help kids in the Downtown Eastside.

Babers said that as of Thursday, 748 items of the 4,300 collected had been reclaimed.

Passports, wallets and anything else with formal identification were turned over to the police. BlackBerrys and cell-phones will be turned over to the companies that sold the phones so they can try to track down the owners.

"We had everything from a camera bag with camera and extra batteries to a single red mitten, and lots and lots of umbrellas," she said, adding some of the long umbrellas were found in venues where they were restricted because they could block spectators' views.

The items are organized in boxes with tags stating the venues where they were found, where they were found in the venues and the date they were found. A box of prescription glasses will go to an organization that delivers them to people in need in Africa, said Hoekema.
