“Unbelievable! And the United States gets the gold!” The Olympics is a time when people from all around the world meet together in one place to show each other all their hard work throughout the years. It all starts off with the opening ceremony. The representatives from each country hold their flags and wave to the crowd. Then the games officially begin. Here are some highlights from this year’s games:
Figure skating: Kim Yu-Na lived up to her reputation as she gave South Korea their first ever Olympic figure skating title with her spectacular performance. Although, Canada's Joannie Rochette took the bronze, as she bravely competed after the death of her mother, Therese, who died of a heart attack four days before her daughter’s performance.
Snowboarding: Anderson Jasey Jay took the gold for Canada and his children were proud to stand with him. On the other hand, Austria took second, and France third. Ski jumping: Austria took the gold. Curling: Sweden beat Canada 7-6 after a very intense game and took home the gold.
Luge: Austria's Andreas Linger and his younger brother Wolfgang won their Olympic luge doubles title, beating Latvian siblings Andris and Juris Sics and bumping them into silver.
In the Olympics people show love for the sport and a great deal of preparation. They start off nervous and say their prayers. Next, they begin to feel excited and still very hopeful that they do well. The stressful part for some very competitive athletes is the judging, but on the other hand, some consider their fate left to destiny. They know they have tried their hardest out there and they went this far and that’s what a true athlete would say.
