The 2010 Winter Olympics are finally over. For some those two weeks went by in a flash but for others they seemed like an eternity. The 21st Olympiad was one of numerous highs and numerous lows and a good portion of America watched those games every day ... giving it some of the highest ratings of any Winter Olympics ever. Covering the games for both NewJerseyNewsroom.com and working with a top notch crew at NBCOlympics.com has been a career high point for this reporter. So after two sleepless weeks and countless hours spent in front of a television watching everything that could be watched, my Best and Worst Moments List is finally ready.
#3 Best Moment: Evan Lysacek beats Yevgeni Plushenko
Evan Lysacek won gold in Men's Figure Skating beating out the heavy favorite, Russian Yevgeni Plushenko. Plushenko, a now three-time Olympic medalist, came out after the games denouncing both the judging and Lysacek's performance. He went back to Russia and proclaimed that he was in fact the champion and held the "Platinum" medal.
#2 Best Moment: USA takes Silver in Hockey
The silver medal winning United States Men's and Woman's Hockey Teams. Both teams dominated in tournament play. In the first three games the women's team allowed only one goal while scoring over 35. The men's gold medal game has been touted by some as one of the greatest hockey games ever played. Yes, the 1980 Miracle On Ice game against the Russians holds much more significance for the U.S., but this game has shown how great the sport truly can be.
#1 Best Moment: USA setting overall medals record and Apolo Ohno taking individual medals record
Taking the gold is the entire American contingent that was sent to the not-so-frigid north to compete against the greatest athletes in the world for the greatest prize in all of sport. The United States now holds the overall record for most medals won in a Winter Olympics while American Short Track Speed Skater Apolo Ohno now holds the individual overall record.
#3 Worst Moment: Lindsey Vonn a bust
American alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. Vonn came into Vancouver being one of the faces of Team USA. She was expected to win or medal in at least five different events. Vonn was fighting a major shin injury that made it difficult for her to walk, let alone ski, for a few days. She came out strong in her first event, winning gold. She then earned one more medal before failing to finish her last two events. She was featured in Sports Illustrated and has been making the talk show circuit and even has a TV show appearance on the books. Overall, Vonn is coming out of this way ahead, even without the medals.
#2 Worst Moment: Missed call costs Dutch speed skater the gold and American Scotty Lago sent home after pictures surface on internet.
Sven Kramer, who was all but assured a gold medal, was disqualified after his coach made an error and told him to change lanes when he shouldn't have. In this case the difference between gold and being disqualified was only about five feet.
Meanwhile, controversial photos surfaced of Lago, a snowboarder, with his bronze medal and Team USA gear. Due to these photos, he returned home before the end of the Games.
#1 Worst Moment: The Death of Georgian Luger Nodar Kumarishtavili
One of the worst moments in recent Olympic history has to be the death of Nodar Kumarishtavili, the Georgian Luger who was killed in a practice run before the opening ceremony had begun. Kumarishtavili had told his father that he was afraid of the track and felt it was not safe. After Kumarishtavili's death the track, which at the time was the fastest in the world, was highly modified in order to prevent a competitor from departing the sliding surface.
