More history has been made again for the USA at the Winter Olympic Games. Bill DeMong and Johnny Spillane finish one and two in the Nordic Combined Individual Long Hill/10 km Cross Country event. Never before in the history of the Winter Olympics has the USA earned a gold medal in this event, let alone a gold and a silver in the same event. Nordic Combined—a sport dominated by European countries like Norway, Finland, Germany, and Austria—could be seeing a bad moon rising in the States. Austria's Bernhard Gruber took the bronze.
DeMong, of Saranac Lake, N.Y., scored a 115.5 on his long hill jump, and followed it up with a blistering 24:46.9 on the 10 km CC portion to earn the gold.
Spillane, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., stumbled a little near the 9.2 km point of the 10 km CC race, but was able to recover and, along with DeMong, drop Gruber with about 500 meters to go. He finished the race in 25:02.9 after scoring a 118.5 on the long hill to earn the silver.
Gruber scored a 127.0 on the long hill to start first heading into the 10 km CC portion. Gruber finished the race in 25:43.7.
Other Americans who competed in the event included Todd Lodwick and Taylor Fletcher, both hailing from Steamboat Springs. Lodwick scored a 108.7 on the long hill and finished the 10 km in 25:30.2. Fletcher earned just a 38.0 on the long hill and completed the course in 26:17.5 to finish dead last.
